Threat Emulation scanning Backup files

Zonealarm Threat Emulation seems to be overstepping its bounds and is scanning more than downloads and emails.

I use Veeam Agent to backup my PC to a QNAP server shared drive that is on the same network.   Threat Emulation is scanning every single Zip file that the Backup agent creates and it is killing the ability to use the PC.   I have had to shut off threat emulation to try to prevent it from doing so.

How can I make Threat Emulation stick to its main task and ignore specific files or locations?

  • Hello,

Have you tried to add the folder where these files are saved on your PC or on the network drive to the "exceptions" of ZA? This should stop ZA to monitor the folder for changes.

  • Exceptions do not allow you to add a folder, it only allows exe files to be added.   There should be an option under Threat Emulation in settings or on the window it opens when checking a file to allow the user to mark the file or folder as an exception to be ignored.   The Veeam backup agent creates zip files that the Threat Emulation is scanning and then ignoring because they are larger than 50MB.   The problem is that the process is slowing down the backup and because it is doing the scanning on every zip file the backup creates then it is slowing the PC as it is using too much memory and processor for anything else to run.

  • Thank you, indeed ZA exception seems only accepting executables. I am afraid you will need to wait for a response from a ZA representative. I suspect more granular exception setup has not been implemented in home products (yet).
